Learning & EYFS

The curriculum, in plain English

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage. Here is what each of its seven areas actually looks like on a Tuesday morning.

  1. 1

    Communication and language

We talk constantly — narrating what a child is doing, waiting for an answer, singing the same songs until they join in.

  2. 2

    Personal, social and emotional development

Naming feelings out loud, taking turns with the good spade, and being helped to repair things after a wobble.

  3. 3

    Physical development

Climbing and running in the garden, and the small stuff too: threading, tweezers, cutting fruit, doing up a coat.

  4. 4

    Literacy

Books read on request over and over, story props, chalk and paint marks, and children's own names on their pegs.

  5. 5

    Mathematics

Laying the table for four, counting stairs, filling and emptying at the water tray, noticing pattern in beads.

  6. 6

    Understanding the world

Planting and watering, weather at the window, the walk to the market, and celebrating the festivals our families keep.

  7. 7

    Expressive arts and design

Paint, dough, junk modelling, dressing up and a lot of loud singing. Process over product, always.

Staying in touch

How we share your child's progress

  • Every day: a proper spoken handover at collection — what they ate, slept, loved and found hard.
  • Every week: photographs and short notes of what your child has been absorbed in, sent to you privately.
  • Every term: a short written summary against the EYFS areas, and a conversation about it — including the statutory progress check between the ages of two and three.
  • Any time: if you are worried, say so. We would always rather talk early.

Settling in

Nobody is left on their first day. We take it at your child's pace, and we do not charge for settling sessions.

  1. Step 1

    A visit together

You stay the whole time. Your child explores; we get to know each other and take down every detail of their routine.

  2. Step 2

    A short session

An hour or so without you, at a time of day that suits them. We call or message you partway through, every time.

  3. Step 3

    A longer session

Including a meal, and a nap if they usually have one, so the shape of the day becomes familiar.

  4. Step 4

    First full day

Only when your child — and you — are ready. There is no fixed timetable for this.

The best way to understand any of this is to watch it happen
